Bend-A-Knee Weekly Sermon 12/28/2023

Well, Christmas 2023 is over. Another Christmas to file away in your memory banks, or add the photos taken to the hundreds you have stored on your phone, never to be looked at again. For some the week between Christmas and the coming New Year allows for time off work. For others it is back to the same old grind; life just continues on as before with a brief hiccup of uniqueness, Christmas.

As we are on the threshold of a new year it is always promoted as a time for new beginnings, a time to make personal improvements, a time to commit to life altering changes that will change the trajectory of your future. Sounds great doesn’t it, BUT, for most people a new year means nothing more than turning the page on a calendar and training your brain to write 2024 on anything that needs to be dated. “New Years Resolutions” are not even considered because of past failures.

For some of you who committed to the New Testament Reading Program in 2022 and then the Old Testament Reading Program in 2023 you proved to yourself that you can actually follow through with a yearlong commitment – congratulations! I am so proud of you! As I considered what I could promote this year to follow up the success of the Reading Programs I was propelled toward a more difficult endeavor. I mentioned on Sunday the concept of “journaling.” Small journals have been purchased with the intent of promoting those who desire a closer walk with God. The goal of the process is in being able to look back and recognize the faithfulness of God. Being able to view the worries & anxieties of everyday life in light of God’s provision, to rejoice again in the praises recorded and the way in which God responded to your prayers, provides a tremendous avenue to view one’s life in retrospect, in light of God’s hand at work.

I believe this is the next step in building a closer relationship with God. Inside the journals are some suggested avenues to consider. Papers with “journaling prompts” have been placed next to the journals. I know this will be hard for some, I have already been confronted by doubters. This is not some “girly” endeavor meant only for the females in our congregation. The bottom line revolves around your relationship with God…

Today as you consider pausing at noon to Bend-A-Knee in prayer may you ask God to grant you the willingness to express yourself honestly: praises & anxiety; victories & defeats; joys & fears – etc. I believe if practiced faithfully God will be revealed as never before, so you can “soar” in 2024…!

Stay connected to God & to others

God’s Peace,

Pastor Mike
