Just a “Heads Up!” Something is about to happen; well, it’s already happened and will happen again and again! Four “supermoons” will appear in a row. A full moon occurs when the moon, in its monthly orbit, is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun; in other words, the sun, earth and the moon align in space with the earth in the middle. However, a “supermoon” is when the moon in its orbit is closer to the earth than the average full moon.
Every month there is a given name assigned to the corresponding full moon. Normally known as the “Buck Moon”, the first of the four supermoons happened on July 3. Next Tuesday, August 1, the next supermoon, normally the “Sturgeon Moon” will appear. A “Blue Moon” (a full moon happening twice within a month) will appear on August 30, and finally on September 29, a “Harvest Moon”, will appear as a supermoon. The supermoons have an impact on the earth’s ocean tides causing a greater variation in high and low tides. If you remember, take a look and if the weather is clear, the moon will appear bigger & brighter than the average full moon.
As a disciple of Christ, we are like the moon. We reflect the light of the Son, the Eternal Son given the name Jesus. We, like the moon, do not create light; we just reflect light. I have stated on numerous occasions that my desire is to be a full moon, well actually a supermoon. Imagine if we as disciples of Christ aligned ourselves with the Son that we would reflect His light to a sin darkened earth as a supermoon and that we would have a noticeable brightness and actual impact on others as a supermoon has on the earth?
Today as you consider pausing at noon to Bend-A-Knee in prayer may you ask God to allow you to serve as a supermoon to reflect His glory. If you want to be a supermoon for Christ you need to align yourself with Him and simply reflect His light. A supermoon is a natural occurrence; may your reflection of Christ become a natural part of who you are as His disciple. May your reflection of Him serve as a beacon of light when darkness seems to prevail. Remember darkness has no physical properties, it is merely an absence of light. If you are a supermoon for Christ your world, your circle of influence, will notice and be impacted by the way you reflect Christ to them for His glory.
God’s Peace,
Pastor Mike
