Bend-A-Knee Weekly Sermon 07/04/2024

Today is Independence Day, a special day for all citizens of the United States of America. A day to celebrate our nation declaring itself to be an independent nation. The forefathers of our great nation signed the Declaration of Independence, stating our determination to become a free country. This resolve for freedom would be tested. Actually, the Revolutionary War was in full swing having started more than a year prior to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The war would continue for another seven years with many difficult skirmishes ahead testing the resolve of the freedom fighters proving the truth to the statement that freedom is most definitely not free, it comes at a great cost!

The freedom we have in Christ Jesus came at the greatest cost. Not only did the Eternal Son leave the grandeur of heaven to confine Himself to a human body but He bore the wrath of the Father carrying our sins on the cross of Calvary. The result of His death would bring freedom from the enslavement of sin and His resurrection would break the power of death.

We value freedom, we consider ourselves entitled to freedom and claim the benefits of living in a country that extends sometimes controversial freedoms that challenge our consideration of the worth of freedom. The concept of liberty creates the mindset of maintaining control. The absence of freedom promotes the idea of being in bondage without choices, having others act as the controlling force in one’s life; that is why one’s independence is such a valued commodity.

This mindset creates a major struggle in regard to accepting true freedom in Christ. We need to invert our understanding of how to gain true liberty. We need to relinquish control in order to obtain authentic freedom. When we cling tightly to our effort to control our lives, we fail to allow the Holy Spirit the reign He needs in order for His liberty to envelope our entire being. Submission is not a word we connect with independence but in order to understand the freedom God wants to grant us we need to declare our dependence on Him which will ultimately lead toward a release from bondage that has never been experienced before.

Today as you consider pausing at noon to Bend-A-Knee in prayer may you openly declare your dependence on God. May you submit control to the Holy Spirit and release the grasp you have on your image of freedom as being in control and freely grant the Holy Spirit the reign He deserves.

Stay connected to God & to others

God’s Peace,

Pastor Mike
