Bend-A-Knee Weekly Sermon 05/16/2024

Several years ago, the title of a sermon I shared was: “Clean out the Fridge” I shared that most of us could survive for quite some time on just what is stored in our refrigerator. Unfortunately, we purchase items we don’t really need and push what is already in our refrigerator back to the area of isolation behind the newly purchased items. They remain there until one day we decide to clean out the fridge and realize that the items in the back have passed their expiration dates to the point that all we can do is throw them away. We are such wasteful people; our abundance is absurd!

God has abundantly supplied His children with everything we need not just in regard to our physical needs but also to accomplish everything He desires toward advancing His Kingdom. The evidence is shared with us in the second chapter of Acts; “Pentecost” (which is this Sunday). The indwelling of the Holy Spirit changed Jesus’ early followers from ones who hid behind closed doors to ones who became bold declarers of the resurrected Christ. Jesus laid the foundation for His followers through His teaching and miracles. His resurrection would become the linchpin of their faith but they still remained fearful followers. It was the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that empowered them to become brazen proclaimers of their Savior, Jesus the Christ.

The same Holy Spirit can have the matching effect in God’s children today. Scripture states that every disciple of Christ has been indwelled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14). Unfortunately, the power and provision of God’s Spirit has not been accessed by many followers of Christ. He has been pushed back into the furthest regions of our being, because we constantly fill our lives with less significant things that we consider more important. The result is that even though we are aware of what has been provided for us we don’t access what is available to us through the indwelling Holy Spirit. God’s grace is apparent in that He doesn’t place an expiration date on His Spirit’s power and authority. All we need to do is clean out what is taking up useless space and access what He has given.

Today as you consider pausing at noon to Bend-A-Knee in prayer may you ask God to help you declutter your heart and mind. Seek His guidance as you tap into the life changing power of the Holy Spirit. May you recognize that you have been given the same power to impact your world as the first followers of Christ. Yes, you have all you need for His service!

Stay connected to God & to others

God’s Peace,

Pastor Mike
