Bend-A-Knee Weekly Sermon 05/09/2024

Today is “Ascension Day.” An often-overlooked major event in the Christian calendar. For forty days following Jesus’ resurrection He appeared without notice to His followers. At the end of this time period Jesus physically ascended to His place of honor beside God the Father. As He ascended beyond the clouds two angels challenged those who were straining their eyes to see Him: “Why are you standing here staring into heaven?” (Acts 1:11) Jesus had already given His followers their marching orders to stay in Jerusalem until the Father sends the gift He promised. The angels were reminding Jesus’ followers to do as they had been told – time to stop staring into the clouds, Jerusalem awaits.

The world was about to be impacted by Jesus’ followers but before they were unleashed, they were instructed to wait. The next ten days were spent united together in constant prayer. Jesus’ followers had no idea how long they were to wait, just that they were to wait. Soon their lives would be changed forever; from sniveling, fearful, behind close doors, followers of Christ into bold declarers of their resurrected Lord.

Jesus was no longer physically with His followers but soon they would receive the life changing force of the Holy Spirit. This event would fulfill Jesus’ declaration of His disciples that they would do even greater works than what He had done because He was going to be with His Father. These greater works would result in yet another fulfillment of Jesus’ words that these same followers, who were stymied by fear would become bold witnesses of Christ – “in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”  (Acts 1:8)

The baton had been passed with the all-sufficient power of the Holy Spirit granted, to enable Jesus’ followers to fulfill what Jesus had stated about them. Their time of preparation under Jesus’ tutelage was complete; they would be released into the world as “change agents” for the Kingdom of God.

Today as you consider pausing at noon to Bend-A-Knee in prayer may you recognize that Jesus’ words and the power of the Holy Spirit within every believer gives each of us everything we need to also be “change agents” on behalf of God’s Kingdom. May you claim the same power that propelled Jesus’ early followers to enter a broken world with His gospel message. YOU, have been called to be a “change agent” – GO, in the power of the Holy Spirit!

Stay connected to God & to others

God’s Peace,

Pastor Mike
