Bend-A-Knee Weekly Sermon 02/29/2024

Today is an anomaly, it is February 29, this occurrence only happens every four years; we call it a “leap year.” The Gregorian calendar serves as the standard calendar throughout the world. A “normal” year consist of 365 days, a “leap year” has 366. The reason that an extra day is necessary every four years is that it takes the earth 365 days and a quarter of a day to complete its orbit around the sun. To synchronize the calendar and the astronomical calendar, another day is added every four years. February has been chosen as the month to add the day due to the fact that it is the shortest month of the year; but the extra day could be added to any month. To complicate matters there is an eleven-minute discrepancy that must be accounted for, so, every four hundred years a “leap year” is omitted three times within that span.  A century year cannot be a leap year unless it is divisible by four hundred. “Leap Seconds” also occur periodically, less than once a year, which allow for precise alignment with the astronomical calendar.  Confused yet?

What’s the big deal? Why make these adjustments? These slight variations seem insignificant to most of us but as time goes by, without adjusting the days and times, our seasons would be out of alignment, resulting is total confusion regarding planting and harvesting crops.

What we deem as insignificant often is much more important than what we think. Satan dwells in the seemingly insignificant. He loves when we consider a particular path we are on or a habit that is being formed as unimportant. A destructive pathway or habit when extended over time leads toward disaster. So often it is hard for us to see how a particular decision or pattern of behavior can ultimately lead to devastating results. How often have you stated or heard others say: “It’s no big deal” or “I can stop any time” in regard to the pathway they are on or the pattern of behavior they are establishing. Certainly, it may not have started as a big deal or it may have been possible to stop anytime at the beginning, but ultimately the seemingly innocent deviations lead us away from God. The imperceptible nature of each step and act, when extended over time, cause many to exclaim: “How in the world did I get to this point in my life?”

Today as you consider pausing at noon to Bend-A-Knee in prayer may you ask God to give you discernment and courage to recognize immediately Satan’s ploy and the courage to stay the course toward Christ and His teachings; refusing to deviate in even the slightest manner.

Stay connected to God & to others

God’s Peace,

Pastor Mike
