Bend-A-Knee Weekly Sermon 01/25/2024

I just purchased some rough-cut lumber for a future project. The wood is “green” which means it was just recently cut and milled. The lumber you purchase at a lumber yard or box store like Home Depot or Lowes has been kiln dried. This process uses circulated heated air to efficiently bring the moisture level of “green” lumber down to levels that will prevent a myriad of potential problems – these problems include warping, twisting, buckling or crowning.

I will be air-drying the wood I purchased to allow the moisture content in the wood to be removed naturally. This process takes longer and I would only recommend this process for uses in certain applications unless conditions allow for the wood to become moisture free over a long period of time. One of the necessary steps in air-drying wood is to properly stack the wood. It needs to be stacked in such a manner that air can circulate around each piece of wood. It needs to be “stickered.” Which means small pieces of wood are placed in between the stacked wood to allow for air flow.

As I was stacking the wood, I thought of the process we allow the Holy Spirit to use to bring us toward Christlikeness. The Holy Spirit’s work within each disciple of Christ may not be exactly the same but the goal of sanctification, the process of becoming like Christ, is His desire. Some of us feel like we have been placed in a kiln. The refining process of tragedy and difficulty that God allows, provide us the opportunity to rid ourselves of unwanted debilitating practices that separate us from God. For some of us the Holy Spirit works through a longer process to attain the same desired outcome. This seemingly endless refining process needs to be accompanied by patience by both the one going through the process and those who surround them.

Today as you consider pausing at noon to Bend-A-Knee in prayer may you ask God to help you take advantage of the opportunities to allow His refining process to continue its work in you. Your willingness to take advantage of the opportunities placed before you will provide the Holy Spirit the ability to bring about His desired outcome in your life. May you also ask God to give you the patience to accept the Holy Spirit’s refining process in yourself and others that is seemingly endless. Remember, God’s refining process, however it looks, is designed for you to become Christlike.

Stay connected to God & to others

God’s Peace,

Pastor Mike
