Bend-A-Knee Weekly Sermon 01/18/2024

It is frigid outside! The snow on the ground seems to make it even colder, with more snow expected tomorrow. The older I get the more the cold weather bothers me. It certainly is nice to sit beside a roaring fire in the fireplace looking out on the snow-covered woods as I write this edition of Bend-A-Knee.

Thirty years ago, almost to the day, January 21, 1994 the coldest air temperature ever recorded in Harrisburg, Pa. occurred, 22 degrees below zero (Not wind chill but actual air temperature). Also, in 1994 seventy-six inches of snow fell that year resulting in the greatest cumulative snow fall ever recorded in Harrisburg, Pa. I remember what I was doing during that horrific weather event, I was working outside shoveling snow off people’s roofs and breaking ice out of their gutters to prevent snow and ice damage.

I was a lot younger in 1994 to be able to tackle such a task. I certainly didn’t enjoy working under such weather conditions and it wasn’t because I didn’t have inside work that I had on the schedule; I responded to calls for help from my regular customers who couldn’t afford to be fleeced by some contractors who were taking advantage of the situation by charging outrageous prices. I considered it my duty as a disciple of Christ to always charge fair prices for the work I was employed to undertake. I believe God honored my attempt to serve Him. In seventeen years of being a self-employed remodeling contractor I never had one day without work. I considered it a privilege to help people through my career.

How about you, do you consider whatever task you undertake on behalf of others to be an opportunity to bring glory to God? I believe God’s desire for His children is to seize the opportunities, even undesirable ones, to promote His love through acts of service on behalf of others. I know some of you are thinking that I was getting paid for my actions and that was certainly true, but I also took advantage of the opportunity to share the gospel of Jesus Christ along with my physical actions. You may be under the constraints of your employer to restrain from overtly sharing the gospel but there are numerous opportunities available if we remain alert.

Today as you consider pausing at noon to Bend-A-Knee in prayer may you ask God to open your eyes to the opportunities today to honor Him through physical acts of service accompanied by verbally acknowledging God as your Savior. Ask God to give you the boldness to take advantage of opportunities that present themselves to be a herald of God’s Kingdom.

May you also uplift those who have to work outside in these temperatures to ensure others safety and provide services on behalf of others.

Stay connected to God & to others

God’s Peace,

Pastor Mike
